If you want a quick answer: No, itโ€™s not worth it.
But why? Well, before I explain, let me take you through my journey of learning English.

๐Ÿš€ How It Started

It all started in August 2022, when I thought:

I should learn English โ€” itโ€™s an important language around the world.

So I went to the Play Store, searched for a language learning app, and voilร  โ€” I found Duolingo.

๐Ÿ”„ My On-and-Off Relationship with Duolingo

At first, I just dove in. I did speaking, reading, writing, and listening every day. But after a few weeks...

๐Ÿ˜ฌ I got too shy to do the speaking exercises (people were around me),
so I deleted the app.

A few months later, I reinstalled it again. This time, I found a feature I loved:
๐Ÿ“˜ Duolingo Stories โ€” they helped a lot with reading and listening.
But yepโ€ฆ I eventually got bored again and uninstalled it.

โœจ The Good Parts

Later, my teacher told me how important English is for programmers โ€”
especially for reading documentation.

He gave simple advice:

โ€œSet your phone to English โ€” it helps!โ€

(I had already done that ๐Ÿ˜)

So, I reinstalled Duolingo again. But now, I didnโ€™t pressure myself to grind lessons.
I just kept a daily streak and stayed consistent โ€” even if I only did one small practice per day.

โŒ Why I Think Itโ€™s Not Worth It (Free Plan)

After using Duolingo for 2 years, hereโ€™s my honest take (especially on the free plan):

  • ๐Ÿง  It only teaches basic grammar and sentences
  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Speaking exercises are locked behind premium
  • ๐Ÿ“‰ You get repetitive content โ€” which can get boring
  • ๐Ÿงฉ Sometimes you learn new words, butโ€ฆ I forget them often ๐Ÿ˜…

So, is it completely useless?
No. It helps you build a habit. But itโ€™s not enough on its own.

๐Ÿ’ฌ My Real Learning Methods

Hereโ€™s what really improved my English:

  • ๐ŸŽฅ Watching English YouTube videos
  • ๐ŸŽง Listening to native speakers
  • ๐Ÿ“– Free English courses on YouTube
  • ๐Ÿง  Talking to myself in my head in English
  • โœ๏ธ Writing blogs โ€” like this one! ๐Ÿ˜„

Duolingo is one tool. But if you rely only on it โ€” you wonโ€™t improve much.
You need other ways to practice, and you have to find what works best for you.

๐Ÿ’ก Final Advice

If you want to learn a language:

  • Donโ€™t stress yourself trying to be perfect
  • Be consistent โ€” thatโ€™s more important than doing it hard
  • Mix tools like Duolingo with real-world input and output

๐Ÿ‘‰ My English is still bad, but Iโ€™m improving every day โ€” and thatโ€™s what matters.
๐ŸŒ I also enjoy the idea of learning other languages like Japanese or Spanish,
but honestly... I donโ€™t even know where to start โ€” hehe ๐Ÿ˜…
